It has been a great start to the school year! As we settle into routines, start to receive grades and watch our teams compete, I want to continually remind our community of why we do what we do. Our vision at Hartfield is to see every student fulfill their God-given purpose. Every class, Awakening service, practice, and relationship built is an opportunity for us to see our students take a step toward becoming what God has made them to be.
I recently returned to campus after a trip overseas to finalize our daughter’s adoption. Walking through the open, bright and beautiful corridor of the new High School, I noticed the fresh wall graphics and the furniture with students gathered and visiting before school. They were gathered reading something intently so I asked what had grasped their interest. I was incredibly pleased to learn that one of our seniors, Oliver Adams, has created a weekly newsletter for our Upper School called the “Hawk Squawk” complete with a student spotlight, scores, a schedule of the weekly events, Hartfield trivia, and more! It turns out that Oliver, with the guidance of one of his teachers, has found an outlet to use his gifting that blesses others and contributes to our community. Great work, Oliver! Whether it is through athletics, theater, learning academically, working hard at an after school job, or journalism like Oliver, God has a unique gifting and call for each of our students. Let’s keep pointing them toward what God has created them to be and celebrate as they grow and learn!
Our campus will be full of life with several important events on campus in the coming months. First up, Homecoming week will be September 17th-21st. Join us as we celebrate Hartfield with fun dress up days for students, a pep rally, the presentation of our Homecoming Maids, and the big football game against St. Andrews on Friday night at 7 pm. Students will end the night with a Homecoming Dance in the new Colbert Theater. We hope you will join in on the festivities!
Hart & Soul will then be here before we know it! Please mark your calendars for October 18th at 6:00 pm and make plans to attend this special, annual event. This is a great opportunity for our community to mingle and catch up, while also helping support our school. Last year, Hart & Soul raised over $80,000 that benefitted Hartfield and the students in numerous ways. It’s a great “date night” with your spouse and our Hart & Soul Committee of HOST is working hard to make it a special evening.
I want to thank our board, my leadership team, our faculty, students, and you for allowing me time away during the past few weeks. I realize it is not standard for a Head of School to miss the first few weeks of school, but I am grateful for the ways you all have supported a calling my family has had for years. I left with the confidence that our leadership was fully capable of handling anything that may come up and returned to see that confidence was well placed. Thank you.
During our time in China we welcomed our daughter Cara Mei into the family, had the privilege of spending time with her in China meeting her caregivers, and were able to finalize her adoption. It was a cherished time for us and I look forward to introducing her to each of you over the next several weeks. As a proud Dad, I’ve taken the liberty to share a few pictures from our time in China and of Cara. If you have time, take a moment to glance at them here.
I have always loved to travel and see other cultures, but this trip more than ever before I had higher anticipation and longing to return home to Mississippi. It has been so good to be back and interacting with our students and families at school especially. I was reminded that there’s no impressive cities, ancient wonder, or advanced technology that can replace the community that we each share here in central Mississippi and Rankin County.
It’s a privilege to partner with you and be a part of all that God is doing at Hartfield. Thank you for choosing to be a part of the Hartfield family!
